Your baby this week

By 33 weeks your baby now weighs 2kg and measures up to 44cm from head to toe. Your child may be getting ready for birth by turning upside-down. The head should be pointing down, ready for the journey into the world.

Antibodies are being passed from you to your baby as he/she continues to develop his/her own fetal immune system.

Your baby’s skin is becoming  less red and less wrinkled as fat stores continue to be deposited under his/her skin. His/her bones are all beginning to harden with the exception of the skull. The skull needs to remain soft and pliable for delivery.

With your baby occupying all the space in your uterus, some of his/her pokes and kicks will feel sharper.

Your body this week

The top of your uterus is a little over 5 inches from your belly button.

If this is your first pregnancy, your baby’s head may move into your pelvis this week and press firmly against your cervix. If you’ve had a child before, you can expect this to happen a week before labour. For some women, this won’t happen until the start of labour.

You may notice the following symptoms this week:

  • Stronger fetal activity
  • Increasing clumsiness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Braxton Hicks contractions
  • Occasional headaches
  • Varicose veins
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Nail changes
  • Protruding navel
  • Shortness of breath
