Your baby this week

You are almost there! From 32 weeks, babies prematurely have a good chance of surviving and thriving.

Your baby now weighs about 1.7kg and measures  42cm long from head to toe. Your child’s lungs are not yet fully developed, full development will happen just before birth. In the meantime your little one is inhaling amniotic fluid to exercise his/her lungs.

Your little one will  gain a third to half of his/her birth weight during the next 7 weeks as he/she fattens up for survival outside the womb. His/her skin is also becoming soft and smooth as he plumps up in preparation for birth.

Your baby now has toenails, fingernails, and hair. Your baby’s skeleton has also completely formed, but his/her bones are very soft and pliable.

Your body this week

By this stage, you are probably gaining 450g a week. Your baby is likely to gain more than half his birthweight during the seven weeks before birth, so make sure you are eating well in these last few weeks.

Your big belly will be huge now, and you may be attracting a lot of attention. Because the top of your uterus is so high, you may begin to have trouble breathing or feel short of breath. Your growing uterus is placing pressure on your diaphragm. This same pressure can also result in an increased amount of heartburn.

Your blood volume should have increased by 40% to 50% during the past 32 weeks. This is to allow your body to accommodate both you and your baby. This increased volume is also important because it makes up for the amount of blood you will lose during delivery.

Other common symptoms noticed this week include:

  • Itchy abdomen
  • Enlarged breasts and colostrum
  • Flatulence
  • Bloating
  • Constipation
  • Faintness or dizziness
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Leg cramps
