Your baby this week

Your baby is about 30cm long and weighs 600g. Your baby is gaining weight steadily, with most of the weight coming from accumulating baby fat, as well as from growing organs, bones, and muscle.

Your little one’s brain is growing rapidly at this time. The taste buds are also developing, and his/her footprints and fingerprints are continuing to form.

Your baby’s lungs are becoming more developed and complex. The branches of the main lung are beginning to form as well as the special cells that will produce surfactant. Surfactant helps the air sacs to inflate easily once your baby reaches the outside world. Babies who are born prematurely usually have trouble breathing because these cells have not had enough time to develop or are not producing the necessary amounts of surfactant.

Your body this week

You may find it hard to sleep well as your belly grows. Try lying on your side with a pillow under your upper leg, to take the weight off your stomach. All that stretching may be causing your skin to itch, some women find relief from using cocoa butter or other oil based creams. Other notable symptoms this week include:

  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Snoring
  • Varicose veins
  • Restless legs syndrome (RLS)
  • Skin, hair, and nail changes
