Your baby this week

Your baby’s eyebrows and eyelids should have finished forming this week and you may have started to feel your baby’s movements. You can look forward to more action in the coming weeks, as the initial fluttering movements turn into fully-fledged kicks and nudges. You may also notice a pattern to his/her activity as you get to know him/her better.

As your baby swallows amniotic fluid, his/her digestive tract is continuing to mature. Your baby is receiving some caloric intake from the amniotic fluid.

Your baby should now weigh about 360g and should be about 27cm long.

Your body this week

Many women notice their breasts get bigger at this stage in their pregnancy. At 21 weeks pregnant, your body is preparing for breastfeeding is beginning to produce colostrum.

You may also begin to feel Braxton-Hicks contractions. Braxton Hicks contractions are the contractions that occur before real labour. Braxton Hicks can begin as early as the second trimester. They are not real contractions, but they are your body’s way of practicing for the big event. Expect these contractions to come and go and feel a bit like period cramps.

You may also begin to notice stretch marks as your body expands and your belly and breasts keep on growing.

The following are other pregnancy symptoms that you may notice this week:

  • Strong appetite
  • Flatulence and gas
  • Varicose veins
  • Backaches
  • Bleeding gums
