A+ A A-

An allergy is a hypersensitivity disorder of the immune system.

When a child with allergies comes into contact with an allergen his/her body mistakenly views it as a dangerous invader and releases histamines and other chemicals to fight it off. Allergies occur by coming in contact with an allergen through touching, breathing, eating etc.

Children who have parents with allergies are more likely to develop allergies. The most common allergens are animal hair, mold, dust mites, pollen, insect bites and certain foods such as nuts, eggs, seafood and dairy products.

Symptoms of allergies often look like colds. The following are common symptoms of allergies;

  • A fever that lasts more than 48 hours or a fever that reaches 39.5 degrees Celcius or higher at any time
  • Difficulty breathing or sudden wheezing
  • Excessive sleepiness or confusion
  • A seizure, especially one which could be caused by a possible ingestion of poison
  • Severe vomiting and or diarrhoea that continues for longer
  • Rashes that appear suddenly and spread quickly and occur at the same time with any of the things listed above
  • The presence of blood such as coughing up blood or blood in your child’s urine or vomit
  • Rashes
  • Hayfever
  • Runny eyes, runny nose and sneezing

Over-the-counter allergy medicine such as antihistamines  may help reduce the symptoms of allergies. However don’t give your child any over-the-counter allergy medicine without talking to your doctor first.

You can prevent allergies by reducing your child’s exposure to the most common allergens like dust, animal hair, pollen and mold
