Apollo is also called viral conjuctivitis. It is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and surface of the eye.


Apollo is commonly caused by a viral infection.

Apollo can affect one or both eyes and can be very contagious. It is usually spread through direct or indirect contact with the eye secretions of someone who has been infected.


Symptoms of apollo include;

  • Redness in the white of the eye
  • Swelling of the eyelids
  • Itching or burning feeling of the eyelids
  • Clear or slightly thick, whitish drainage
  • A discharge in one or both eyes that forms a crust during the night that may prevent the eye or eyes from opening in the morning
  • Tearing

Apollo symptoms usually last 5 to 7 days but in some people it can last up to 3 weeks.


See your doctor immediately if you notice any signs or symptoms apollo. Apollo can be highly contagious for as long as two weeks after signs and symptoms begin therefore early diagnosis and treatment, may protect people around you from getting the disease.


Practice good hygiene to control the spread of apollo by;

  • Not touching your eyes with your hands
  • Washing your hands often
  • Using a clean towel daily
  • Not sharing towels or washcloths
  • Changing your pillowcases often
  • Throwing away your eye cosmetics, such as mascara
  • Not sharing eye cosmetics or personal eye care items
